Review: On The Spot Trio @ The Mugshot 2/24

Saturday night had the expectation of no live show, as it was just supposed to be a 50th birthday party for a good friend at a random bar on the Bushwick/Ridgewood border. But upon nearing said bar, the funky tunes were blaring out the window and door of The Mugshot. Within those walls, the On The Spot Trio (composed of Danny Mayer on lead guitar — also plays with the Eric Krasno Band; Kris Yunker on keys; and Andrew Cusanelli on drums) was raging their unique mix of funk, soul, blues and rock and roll. The band had the enthusiastic crowd of NYC Freaks and others moving and grooving all night.

The music was a nice mix of original tunes that they had recorded with Alan Evans (Soulive) a few years back, as well as some well-received covers. From their album “Shag,” the band ripped original songs “Critically Acclaimed Shit,” “Jabo,” and “For 1.” Then they invited up Mary Corso (singer with the Eric Krasno Band), who provided vocals for “Kissing My Love,” the sexy Bill Withers original, “If You Want Me To Stay,” from Sly & The Family Stone, and three originals tunes they wrote together (“Losin My Mind”; “Follow Me”; and “Take You There”). Mary’s voice is both beautiful and sultry, reminding many in the crowd of legend Janis Joplin.

Needless to say, the On The Spot trio played a phenomenal night of music and had the party rocking till the wee hours of Sunday morning. This is a band that should be on any jamband fans’ radar, as they provide an excellent mix of funk, blues, and rock and soul. Danny can absolutely slay the guitar, ripping off some lovely solos throughout the night. And keys player Kris Yunker just crushed it, providing the danceable beats necessary to rock the crowd. Check out OTS Trio on 4/13 at Main Pub in Manchester, CT. Danny and Mary also have duo shows coming up opening for Scott Sharrard on 4/14 at Bridge St Live in Collinsville, CT and on 4/28 at BRYAC in Bridgeport, CT.
