Will Hanza & Friends @ 11th St. Bar 3/1

The 11th Street Bar, located at 510 E. 11th St. in Manhattan’s east village, typically hosts bands or open jams most days of the week. On Thursday night, the Freaks’ own Will Hanza, frontman for the band Escaper, hosted an open jam night from 9-11p, playing mostly with the Escaper boys but inviting other friends to come up and jam with them. The “band” did some noteworthy covers, from Tom Petty’s “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” to Weezer’s “Hash Pipe.” The whole night just had a very casual, fun, funky vibe, and the crowd fed into that. At one point, drummer Nick Salgo and guitarist Mark Mammano replaced some of the Escaper boys and led the ban into some super jammy psychedelic shit. Then, drummer Oliver Burkat (friend of the Freaks List), got on the kit for a “Friend Of The Devil” cover. After that, the Escaper boys got back on stage to launch into Outkast’s “So Fresh and So Clean” and Kenny Rogers’s “On The Road Again.” All in all, it was a very fun night, and you could tell that everyone in the bar, from the band to the audience, was truly enjoying themselves.
