10 Things Not To Miss At LOCKN’ FESTIVAL

I am headed at this moment down to the 6th Annual LOCKN’ Music Festival and I cannot wait! This is my 3rd trip down to what is loveling known as ‘The Farm’ in Arrington, Virginia. This festival is the one I look most forward to every year because of its primary focus on jam bands and funk; moreover, the philosophy of the whole festival focuses on music improvisation and collaboration with artists that you wouldn’t usually see together. This festival’s brainchild is Peter Shapiro who is the founder of some iconic, cutting-edge venues like Brooklyn Bowl and The Capitol Theatre, not to mention he is the iconoclast that got the remaining Grateful Dead members (along with Trey Anastasio) to curate their final performances together dubbed “Fare Thee Well.” My favorite hashtag I have ever created is #peteshapiroismyhero and if you have ever been to any of his events or venues…you would know why!

Review: JRAD at Brooklyn Bowl 3/9

Looking back at a JRAD show and trying to write a recap can always be a fun project, as most JRAD shows that I’ve seen (easily over 20) has a standout performer from that night. The standout performer, in this one writer’s humble opinion, from the 3/8 show was Scott Metzger, as he was given many of the lead guitar solos. When re-examining the 3/9 show, it would be hard to pick one particular member of the band that stood out, but rather a combination of the boys. However, last night, in my mind, Dave Dreiwitz on bass and Marco on keys particularly shone. And I’d say that that was a rarity for me, as I oftentimes cannot pick up on specific major moments from Dave. But he was driving the train last night, and man was that train raging!!

Review: JRAD at Brooklyn Bowl 3/8

A 3-night JRAD run at Brooklyn Bowl always begins with such high energy, anticipation and excitement. For the Freaks and non-Freaks alike in the crowd, the pre-show energy is palpable, with many greeting each other, “Happy JRAD!” The best part about a JRAD run is that you never know what you’re going to get. What songs might they play (anything new)? What teases are they boing to bust out? Are they going to hit the Terrapin Suite? Any other surprises in store, like an acoustic half-set over the bowling lanes?
